A Cozy Fall Home Reset: 9 Simple Ways to Welcome Autumn

A cozy autumn living room with a knit blanket, tea and small pumpkins

There's a moment every October when the light changes, the evenings arrive a little earlier and suddenly all I want is a blanket, a warm drink and a home that feels like a hug. A fall reset is my way of leaning into it.

None of this needs a shopping trip. It's mostly about swapping, moving and refreshing what you already have.

1. Put summer away

Start by clearing out the beach towels, sandals by the door and summer-only decor. A little space makes the cozy things feel special rather than cluttered.

2. Swap in soft textures

Bring out the knit throws, thicker cushion covers and that sweater-weather blanket from the back of the closet. Layering a few textures on the sofa instantly makes a room feel warmer, even before the heating comes on.

3. Warm up your lighting

As the evenings draw in, light makes the biggest difference. Turn off the bright overhead light and use lamps instead. If you're replacing bulbs anyway, look for a warm white (around 2700K on the box) rather than a cool, bluish daylight bulb for living spaces.

4. Clean the windows

It sounds unglamorous, but the low autumn sun shows every smudge, and clean glass lets in noticeably more of the limited daylight we get this time of year.

5. Bring the season indoors

A few small pumpkins or gourds, a jar of fallen branches with colorful leaves, pinecones in a bowl, dried grasses or eucalyptus. Gather what you can on a walk and arrange it simply. Real, natural things look far better than plastic decorations.

6. Start a simmer pot

Orange peel, cinnamon sticks, cloves and a star anise in a small pan of water on low heat will make the whole house smell like fall. I share more recipes in my post on making your home smell amazing naturally.

7. Help your houseplants adjust

Less light and cooler rooms mean most houseplants slow their growth in fall and winter. Move them a little closer to the windows, water less often (always check the soil first) and pause fertilizing until spring. Keep them away from heaters and cold drafts.

8. Make a reading nook

Choose the coziest chair, add a blanket, a lamp and a small table for your mug, and keep a book there. Having a dedicated spot makes it so much easier to choose a chapter over another hour of scrolling.

9. Cook with the season

Fall is the best time of year for slow, simple cooking: soups, roasted squash, apples baked with cinnamon. A pot of something bubbling on the stove might be the coziest thing a home can have.

Enjoy the slow season

You don't need to do all nine this weekend. Pick two or three, put the kettle on, and let your home settle into autumn with you.

Stay cozy,
Kenna
