My Slow Morning Routine (and How to Build Your Own)

Kenna opening the bedroom curtains to let in morning light

A slow morning doesn't mean waking up at five or doing an hour of yoga. For me it just means the first part of the day happens on my terms, before the inbox and the news and everyone else's needs get a say.

Here's what my mornings look like when I get them right, and the thinking behind each step so you can build a version that fits your own life, even if you only have fifteen minutes.

1. Leave the phone in another room

This is the whole foundation. If my phone is on the nightstand, I'll pick it up before my eyes are fully open and the morning is gone. A cheap alarm clock on the dresser means I physically have to get up to turn it off, and my phone stays charging in the kitchen until I've had a little time to myself.

2. Let the light in first

Before anything else, the curtains open. Morning daylight is one of the strongest signals your body uses to set its internal clock, and even on a grey day it's far brighter outside than under a lamp. If I can, I step outside for a minute or two.

3. A big glass of water

I keep a glass by the kitchen sink so it's the first thing I see. It's a small, easy win to start the day with, and it gives the kettle time to boil.

4. Open a window, even briefly

A few minutes of fresh air clears the stuffy overnight feeling from the house. In winter I open it wide for five minutes and close it again rather than leaving it cracked all day.

5. Tea (or coffee) somewhere with a view

I make my tea and take it to the chair by the window. No scrolling, no to-do list yet. Sometimes I read a few pages of a book, sometimes I just watch the birds and the light. Ten minutes of doing one simple thing slowly feels surprisingly luxurious.

6. Move a little

Nothing intense: a few gentle stretches, a short walk around the block or watering the plants. The point is to wake the body up kindly rather than jolting it awake.

7. Choose one intention for the day

Before I pick up my phone, I decide on one thing that would make the day feel good. It might be finishing a project, calling a friend or simply getting outside at lunch. One thing, not ten.

How to build your own

Don't try to copy all of this at once. Pick the two steps that appeal to you most and do just those for a week. For most people, keeping the phone out of the bedroom and getting some daylight early make the biggest difference.

If you only have fifteen minutes before work or before the kids are up, that's enough. Light, water, a warm drink by the window. The morning will still feel like yours.

Looking for something to do with those quiet minutes by the window? A few easy houseplants make that corner even nicer.

Slowly does it,
Kenna
